
Grammy-winning singer Ciara has been granted citizenship of Benin in a powerful ceremony held on July 26, 2025, coinciding with the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.
The event took place in Cotonou, Benin’s largest city, and was attended by high-ranking government officials, including President Patrice Talon.

Ciara, who has been exploring her ancestral roots, was emotional as she received her certificate of citizenship. She proudly declared “Je suis Béninoise” (I am Beninese) during the ceremony.


The singer’s ancestral ties to Benin were confirmed through DNA testing, which led her to participate in the country’s innovative citizenship program for descendants of the African diaspora.
Ciara’s recognition as a Beninese citizen highlights the country’s efforts to reconnect with its diaspora and promote cultural heritage.
Benin’s citizenship law, enacted in 2024, allows individuals with verifiable sub-Saharan ancestry to claim citizenship and reconnect with their ancestral homeland.
