Why I had to leave Chocolate City – M.I Abaga

M.I Abaga today announced the end of his journey with Chocolate City, the record label he has been with for over 13 years. In the same vein, the rapper and record producer announced his own label, Incredible Music.

The announcement coincides with the release of his long-awaited music project, Judah The EP which was released under his new label.

In a video published earlier today on his Instagram page, M.I narrated his story as the video showed clips of his journey with the label over the years.

“Choc boys? We gave everything for that brand… for that name. blood, sweat, tears, time, money, loyalty, sacrifice. I always saw us as growing and adding more artiste and the biggest family in the history of music.

“But sometimes, your best isn’t good enough. My best wasn’t good enough. But it’s alright. So it’s time to say goodbye and do something new.”

A source close to Chocolate City confirmed the rapper’s exit from the label and also revealed that M.I still maintained shares in the company.

M.I Abaga joined Chocolate City in 2007-2008. Under the label, M.I released nine projects – five albums, three mixtapes, and one playlist.

In 2015, M.I was appointed as the CEO of Chocolate City. Under his leadership, Chocolate City signed Ruby Gyang, Ckay, Yung L, Milli, Koker, DJ Lambo, Kahli Abdu & VHS Safari and Loose Kaynon. His position also saw the return of his brother and rapper Jesse Jagz who had left the label in 2013.

In 2019, M.I vacated his position as CEO of Chocolate City following the label’s partnership with Warner Music.
