New twist comes up in Britney Spears’ Conservatorship battle

American singer, Britney Spears’ new attorney has accused her father, Jamie Spears, of seeking about $2m in payments before stepping down from the singer’s conservatorship. This conservatorship controls the singer’s life and finances. Her father has controlled it in part since 2008.

Britney’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, likened this to extortion in a court filing on Tuesday. Rosengart filed a  document arguing that the upcoming scheduled accounting of the conservatorship will mean significant payments for the star’s father. The filing states,

“ Mr Spears’s blatant attempt to barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million in payments. On top of the millions already reaped from Ms Spears’s estate by Mr Spears and his associates, is a non-starter.”

Although Jamie Spears has previously defended his handling of his daughter’s finances, there has been no comment on this accusation.

This filing is a supplement to Rosengart’s July petition for the removal of Jamie as Britney Spears’ conservator.

In response to this, Jamie Spears revealed that he had been planning to step down from the conservatorship. However, he stated no specific time for this.

Rosengart’s latest filing stated that  although there are other issues of misconduct to address, it is not yet the major concern.

“The only question before the court . Which has, unfortunately, been lost for years – is whether Mr Spears’ prompt suspension and removal are in best the interests of Britney Spears. The unequivocal answer is yes.”
