Nigerian music star, Timaya, has sparked controversy after openly criticising major Nigerian award platforms, questioning their credibility and relevance in today’s music industry.

Timaya, known for his long-standing influence in Afrobeats and dancehall,  went on to express his dissatisfaction with award shows such as The Headies, HipTV Awards and Hip Hop Awards. According to Timaya, these platforms do not offer the level of recognition or integrity that artistes deserve.

Timaya went further to compare Nigerian award bodies with international platforms, suggesting that local awards fall short even when measured against global institutions like the Grammy Awards.

Nigerian awards like The Headies, HipTV Awards and Hip Hop Awards are worse than the Grammys. They don’t have credibility

“I’d advise Nigerian artists to aim for the Grammys and international recognition instead of these rubbish awards,” he said.

However, Critics of Timaya’s stance have also pointed out that local awards serve as an important platform for emerging artistes, offering visibility and encouragement within the Nigerian music scene.

As Afrobeats continues to gain international prominence, discussions around the credibility of local recognition platforms remain a key issue for stakeholders in the industry
