Nigerian music legend Alexander Adegbola Akande popularly known as 9ice, has stirred mixed reaction online after slamming the country’s dominant religious culture, claiming it hinders productivity and national progress.
In a viral video clip that has dominated social media, the “Gongo Aso” hitmaker questioned why Nigeria remains underdeveloped despite heavy religious devotion.
“Ever since you’ve been calling the name of Allah and Jesus, this country hasn’t gotten any better,” he said.
9ice moving forward, turned to pilgrimages, stating: “You’ll leave Nigeria and go to Mecca to go and lick rock all in the name of Kabba [Kaaba], yet this country hasn’t improved.”
He highlighted Nigeria’s abundant resources, including crude oil, arguing the nation is still “backwards” despite having “everything we need.”

However, drawing a contrast with life abroad, he picked London saying: “If you go to London, nobody goes to church there. They only go to their place of work. You go to church on Sunday, bible study on Wednesday, vigil on Friday; when would you work? You don’t have a job but you are constantly going to church.”
