Nollywood actress Georgina Gina Onuoha has raised concerns online with a strong message against domestic violence and child abuse in Igbo society.

The veteran actress directly challenged harmful notions of masculinity in a video that has since gone viral, declaring: “Punching women does not make you an Odogwu. An Odogwu is measured by character, integrity and responsibility.”

There is a problem in Igbo land, and it is time we start telling ourselves the truth,” she said. “The rate of domestic violence and child abuse in our society is alarming.”

Furthermore, the actress emphasised that true strength does not lie in violence but in protection and responsibility.

She reminded viewers that in traditional Igbo culture, men who abused their wives were socially condemned, urging a return to those values.

“Violence is not strength. To our men: an Odogwu protects and uplifts his family and community,” she stressed.

Onuoha’s comments on this topical issue has drawn widespread reactions, with many praising her courage for speaking out on a sensitive cultural issue. Others see it as a timely wake-up call amid rising cases of gender-based violence across Nigeria.
