Sex-For-Role: Budding Director Discloses Why She Gave Up Acting Career

Director Pinky has mentioned that she had to walk away from acting due to the incessant demand for sex-for-role to secure a breakthrough in the industry.

The budding Nigerian music video director, Praise Onyeagwalam, who is better known as Director Pink, gave a detailed reason for choosing to distance herself from acting.

The award-winning cinematographer explained that the humiliation and sexual exploitation of aspiring actors made her quit that career path.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, Director Pink said the humiliation of standing in long queues at movie auditions and shady calls from male filmmakers inviting her to compromising locations made her switch careers to become her own boss.

“I wanted to be an actress, but the humiliation was too much. Long queues, shady ‘come to this location’ calls. I said ‘No.’ That’s when I chose to be my own boss,” she said.

Director Pink added that being a music video director is also challenging, but she is willing to make sacrifices for her career.

She urged upcoming music video directors to be patient and embrace delayed gratification, stressing that it took those at their peak years to achieve their current status.

Sex-For-Role: What Does it Mean?

The discussion around sex-for-role became prevalent in the late 2010s and early 2020s following a documentary named Sex-For-Grades, which was released by the controversial social media figure and journalist, Kiki Mordi, in 2019. Several women in the Nigerian entertainment industry came out with claims that they were offered sex-for-role to achieve prominence in their acting careers.

Sex-For-Role simply means the use of sex to propel one’s career in the movie industry.
