Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale, has criticised the lack of appreciation for entertainers in Ghana, saying the situation is very different from what obtains in Nigeria.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the 41-year-old artiste reflected on his early struggles despite already being a recognised artiste.
He recalled a period when he had to take taxis to shows and even relied on his girlfriend for accommodation at her parents’ home because he was struggling financially.
He said: “Nigerians appreciate success, Ghana doesn’t appreciate success. As a star, I was sleeping on the street as big as I am. At one point, my girlfriend who was living with her parents’ was the one accommodating me.”
Shatta Wale also claimed that many Ghanaian artistes earn very little compared with their Nigerian counterparts, despite their popularity.

He added: “Even as a big Ghanaian artist, back then, I take taxis to shows. Not just me, a lot of Ghanaian artists do that. Ghanaian artists earn pennies, while their Nigerian counterparts earn big.”
The controversial singer urged Ghanaian entertainers to learn from the Nigerian music industry, particularly when it comes to valuing their work, building stronger standards and demanding better financial rewards for their contributions to the entertainment industry.
