Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Uche Jombo, has voiced her concerns over the growing trend of clickbait content on social media, attributing it to monetisation policies introduced by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Jombo, who is known for her outspoken views on industry and social issues, took to her X official page to criticise what she described as a decline in meaningful conversations on the platform.
According to Jombo, the introduction of financial incentives for engagement has encouraged users to prioritise sensationalism over factual and thoughtful discussions.

“Elon Musk payout $ is to blame for all this nonsensical need to clickbait on this app. This was the one app you come to have real conversations with facts,” she wrote.
However, her remarks have sparked widespread reactions online, with many users echoing her concerns about the increasing prevalence of misleading headlines and exaggerated content designed solely to attract clicks and engagement.
Others, however, argued that monetisation has also created opportunities for creators to earn income, making it a double-edged sword.

One user wrote: “Only Nigerians come here to weep about Elon paying users who are premium subscribers. Monetizing is optional. If you are not interested, ignore it and don’t monetize.
“You can still have real conversation without coming here to complain about what you have no control over. Typical of Nigeria, always wanting others to suffer for no reason. They are not different from the government they parade.”
Another user wrote: “It’s still the best app to get real info and real conversation but if not controlled, would be worse than Facebook.”
Another user wrote: “Uche sit this one out ooo. Go and continue the fine movies you make on YouTube.”
