There has been a trending narrative about the wave of depression emanating in Nigeria, especially amongst the youths. In the last 48 hours, several Nigerian youths have taken to the social media platform X (otherwise known as Twitter) to disclose how they are struggling psychologically, financially, emotionally and spiritually, hence, they are threatening to take their own life.

They want to end it all and probably see what is available in the other sphere of life (if there is any), rapidly losing hope in the Nigerian system and the rulership of those in power. The Nigerian youths are losing their minds, understandably so.

The wave of depression that is hovering around the Nigerian in this moment is traceable, interestingly, it can be curbed and controlled, however, the Nigerian government and those in power are not prepared to take good care of the people and simply do their basic jurisdiction- provide social amenities for the Nigerian citizens, create job opportunities and also the leaders should keep their kleptomaniac persona in check; the leaders have siphoned the funds meant for the development of the state and have been unable to invest in the wellbeing of their fellow natives, unfair to say the least.

The Nigerian youths are amazed at the cruelty of the nation they find themselves in, despite going to school (experiencing strike from university authorities), acquiring knowledge and participating in the laid down guidelines of how to make it in life, they still can’t overcome the ferocious obstacles orchestrated by the statesmen- the prices of commodities are off the roof; youths cannot rent a comfortable apartment nor start a family with their current earnings. The cost of living has put their mental and emotional health in a nefarious position that can’t seem to arise from, therefore, they are losing their minds and sense of purpose and are afraid of the future because they are unsure of what it holds.

A Passive Government

The Nigerian leaders do not seem to care, they are moneygrubbing people who only want power without taking responsibility for what they have signed up for. They want the fame, and they enjoy the money, but they never want to take responsibility or be accountable for the development and growth of their fellow countrymen. The nation is sinking, the youths are scared of what the future has to offer because the government has failed to invest in sectors that would help the wellness of the beautiful people of Nigeria.

The politicians, especially the current administration, have no interest in bringing a transition to the country; they only care about new whips, sending funds to ‘baddies’ and spraying funds at events, meanwhile, the younger generation has no hope for what tomorrow has to offer. They firmly hold on to God, but at the same time, they question their religious beliefs and lose their self-esteem and essence on his green earth.

Nigerians are currently experiencing one of the darkest days in the nation’s history.

The Way Forward

It is quintessential for the government to invest in the development and growth of the nation- they should put funds into various fields such as Science, Technology, Education, Research and Agriculture. Nigeria is a nation is blessed with not only human capacity but endowed with natural resources, an impeccable weather and other worthwhile gifts from mother nature. God has been fair to Nigeria, however, the leaders are hellbent on ruining the emotional and mental wellbeing of the citizens, they are here to kill, steal and destroy the commonwealth of the people of Nigeria- they are thieves in regalia, personnels who are orientating their offsprings to enter into power so that they can continue to crush the continue into ruins and rubbles.

Unfair, to say the least; no one is speaking up for the youths, Instead, the leaders who are from several generations ago are still in power to steal away the future of the country’s youths. A tedious time to be a Nigerian youth, everyday, the prices of commodities skyrocket meanwhile the minimum wage remains the same- there is no progress in the financial and social status of the average graduate, no sense of direction just the same old struggle for a better tomorrow, perhaps the day more come or it might never happen.
