We create the stars too – Omoni Oboli explains why big names dominate Nollywood

Nollywood filmmaker and actress Omoni Oboli has weighed in on the industry’s frequent use of popular actors, describing it as a standard practice not just in Nigeria but across the global film industry.

Speaking in a recent interview, Oboli explained that audiences are naturally drawn to familiar faces, which is why producers often cast well-known actors to increase a film’s appeal and marketability.

All over the world, people build their careers to become household names because the more recognisable you are, the more jobs you get. It’s not unique to Nollywood. Audiences have their favourites, and they want to see them,” she said.

Oboli emphasised that while familiar names draw in viewers, the industry also plays a role in creating stars. By giving opportunities to lesser-known actors and using them repeatedly, she said, filmmakers help them rise to prominence and eventually become audience favorites.

It’s not wrong to say filmmakers use popular faces. Viewers often decide to watch a movie because they recognize who’s on the poster. Just like people buy products from those they know, like, and trust, it’s the same with movies,” she added.

She noted that the desire for popularity among actors is driven by this dynamic, as becoming a recognizable name increases visibility and opens more doors within the industry.

“We don’t just rely on stars, we create them too. And once they become favorites, the entire industry benefits,” Oboli concluded.
