Award-winning Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has shared his thoughts on the growing number of Nigerian filmmakers taking their movies and other content to YouTube, arguing that the current value of the United States dollar has become a major attraction.
According to Afolayan, many filmmakers are beginning to see YouTube as a more financially attractive platform because revenue is largely earned in foreign currency.
Speaking further, he suggested that the excitement surrounding high viewership may be closely linked to the naira’s exchange rate against the dollar.
The 51-year-old explained that earning money in dollars becomes particularly attractive when the naira is weak.
He said:“Nigeria filmmakers are rushing to YouTube because of the dollar exchange rate. At ₦1,400 to $1, they celebrate 1 million views because it can bring in about $10,000. But if the dollar falls to ₦200, everyone will run away from YouTube.”

However, Afolayan’s remarks suggest that, for many creators, their attraction is not simply the platform itself but the purchasing power of the dollar when it is being converted into naira.
