Before this event, there were speculations that the singer would not receive a plaque from the Recording Academy for his part in Brown Skin Girl.

At the beginning of the month, Afrobeat musician and social media activist, Seun Kuti shocked internet users, in a short Instagram video. In it, he indirectly asked Wizkid to stop parading himself as a Grammy nominee. He also claimed that himself, Femi Kuti, Burna Boy, and King Sunny Ade, were the only Nigerian musicians to receive Grammy nominations. He further opined that Wizkid only featured in a song that won a Grammy award. This meant he had no right to claim to have won a Grammy for Nigeria. To him, the song belonged to Beyonce.

Beyonce and Jenn Nkiru directed the video for ‘Brown Skin Girl’. Other directors for the video are Astrid Edwards, Aya Kaido, Jean Mougin, Nathan Scherrer, and Erinn Williams. Brown Skin Girl is a hit single off The Lion King: The Gift album.

Earlier this month, Nigerian music star Burna Boy shared a photo of his GRAMMY trophy on his Instagram page. This came to the excitement of fans and music lovers from his homeland.
