Long thought to be a copy of a lost original veiled with overpainting, it was rediscovered, restored, and included in an exhibition of Leonardo’s work at the National Gallery, London, in 2011–2012, which sold at auction in 2017 for an astonishing $450.3 million, setting a world record.
2. Young Man Holding a Roundel by Sandro Botticelli:
The Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel also known as Portrait of a Young Man holding a Trecento Medallion is a painting attributed to the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli.
On the basis of its style it has been estimated to have been painted around 1480, it was reportedly valued at $475 million in a private sale.
