Popular Nigerian dancer and fitness expert Kafayat Shafau, better known as Kaffy, has candidly shared the key reason behind the collapse of her marriage to music producer Joseph Ameh, which ended in divorce in January 2022.
In her recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Kaffy reflected deeply on the experience, admitting she entered the union unprepared for its realities. “I was not educated enough for marriage, and a lot of us aren’t,” she said.
She pointed out that many people rely solely on their parents’ perspectives, which falls short as proper preparation. “Living through their eyes is not enough education about marriage. It is a special course that needs to be taken.”
Kaffy criticised societal norms, noting that marriage certificates are issued more easily than driver’s licenses. “We can’t have a society that issues you a marriage certificate easier than a driver’s license… but it’s inside this home that all the ills of the society are being built,” she explained.
She advocated for stronger safeguards, including mandatory mental health evaluations, drug tests, couples therapy, and even a year-long program in human behavioural sciences before couples tie the knot. This, she believes, would prevent unnecessary damage to partners and future children.
