Nigerian gospel singer Victoria Orenze has criticised her colleague, Adeyinka Alaseyori, over her recent appeal to Nigerians to pray rather than direct their anger at President Bola Tinubu over the country’s security challenges.

Alaseyori, in a post shared on social media, maintained that prayer remains the most powerful tool and rejected the growing notion that it is no longer effective in addressing Nigeria’s problems.

“Prayers are working. Don’t let anybody tell you prayers are not working,” she said.

The singer argued that leaders at every level, including the president and security agencies, need citizens’ collective prayers. She urged Nigerians to put aside political sentiments and seek divine intervention.

“From the president to the last person in this country, we need to pray. Every parastatal, every sector, we all need prayers,” she added.

Alaseyori also cautioned against assuming that the president, vice president, or security personnel were not making efforts to tackle insecurity, suggesting that spiritual forces could sometimes hinder rescue operations.

“You can’t say the president or vice president is not working. The security personnel might have gone to rescue them and a charm could have covered their face so they would not see anything. That is the place of prayer,” she said.

Reacting to the remarks, Orenze expressed disappointment with some Christian ministers and churchgoers whom she accused of using God’s name for personal gain and defending poor governance for selfish reasons.

“Honestly, I am disappointed in some ministers and churchgoers who just use the name of the Lord for profit,” she wrote.

The gospel singer further stated that some individuals claim to speak on God’s behalf despite not hearing from Him, adding that they only support governments that serve their personal interests.

“Whenever a few are benefiting from a government, they say the government is working because they don’t care about the good of the majority of Nigerians. They only care about their pockets and stomachs,” she said.

Orenze stressed that God does not endorse selfishness, greed, hypocrisy, or wickedness, warning that those who support evil while claiming to represent God do not truly know Him.

She concluded by insisting that Nigerians would continue to pray while also speaking out against injustice.

“We are praying and yet we will speak. Nigerians, prepare for landing,” she added.
