Fast-rising international sensation, Tyla has expresses her likeness for Asake‘s choice of vocals.
The South African sensation discussed the genres that influence her music, particularly her smash hit ‘Water,’ in a recent interview with RollingStone.
Tyla revealed that Amapiano, the dominant mainstream genre in South Africa, is at the heart of her hit single. Amapiano has also made the transition to Nigeria, where it continues to dominate the Afrobeats soundscape.
Tyla also stated that R&B influenced her music, as she was influenced by both male and female R&B stars, as well as pop stars.
Tyla’s single ‘Water’ features Afrobeats genre fusing and arrangement, with Amapiano, R&B melodies, and Pop progression. The rising star acknowledged the influence of Afrobeats in her music, citing Asake’s use of stacked vocals as her favourite element in Afrobeats.
Stacked vocals are the use of multiple (crowd) vocals, similar to an orchestra, to deliver a part of a song, such as the refrain. Asake popularised this aspect of Afrobeats with his electrifying chart-topping releases.
Asake’s use of orchestra vocals on several of his records helped to distinguish his music and contributed to his unprecedented chart-topping run in 2022. Asake used orchestra in his first mainstream hit single ‘Omo Ope’ featuring Olamide, and he continued to use it in his subsequent releases as he rose to superstardom.
Tyla’s latest album, ‘Truth or Dare,’ contains an Afrobeats element as well, as it is a blend of Amapiano, House music, and R&B delivered through an Afrobeats-styled arrangement.
