Nigerian billionaire Tony O. Elumelu, in a candid interview, has openly attributed much of his extraordinary success to luck, while stressing the importance of preparation and relentless hustle.
From a young bank salesman to one of Africa’s most influential business leaders and philanthropists, Elumelu, founder of Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation, said: “I got rich by luck! At times you don’t come out best in class because you’re the fittest or most energetic; sometimes you need luck, and I’m a product of luck.”
The revelation came during the latest episode of the popular YouTube series Flow with Korty, hosted by content creator and filmmaker Eniola Olanrewaju Korty EO and filmed in Abuja just before the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s (TEF) 2026 cohort announcement.

He reflected on his journey from a young graduate with a 2:2 degree who boldly applied to Union Bank to building one of Africa’s most successful business empires.
