Nigerian Afrobeats star BNXN (Buju) has stirred massive online debate after declaring during a live stream from Los Angeles that living in Lagos is more expensive than in LA.
The singer, who recently relocated to the United States, made the remarks while comparing daily financial realities in both cities. “Once you pay your rent in LA, you’re good. Lagos is super expensive,” he stated.
BNXN noted that while housing is the major cost in Los Angeles, revealing he pays $12,000 monthly, he noted that other expenses remain manageable.

In contrast, he highlighted the relentless financial pressures back home, including constant requests for money from family, friends, and fans, which he says add a heavy emotional and monetary burden which is absent in the US.
The viral clip has triggered divided reactions. Many in the diaspora supported his view, citing relief from “bill demands” and the “Japa” struggles. However, critics pointed out that objective data show LA’s rents often exceed $2,000–$3,000 for a one-bedroom apartment, which is significantly higher than typical Lagos rates.
Other celebrities who have relocated to LA are Ayra Starr and Asake. However, both have shared how much they miss Lagos and its vibe.
