Rising Nigerian music star Qing Madi has sparked widespread reactions after declaring that earnings in the music industry are far from ordinary.

In a candid moment from her recent appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, the young powerhouse stated plainly, “Music money is not even normal,” before drawing a striking comparison: “I think that music money is like drug money.”

She elaborated that the massive and rapid payouts feels almost unreal, likening them to illicit windfalls rather than typical earnings.

The young artist tied Nigeria’s deep passion for music to a broader societal need, suggesting, “I feel like the reasons Nigerians love music so much is because we don’t have therapists.”

In her view, songs serve as an emotional release in a country where mental health support remains limited.

Qing Madi, born Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, has built a reputation for herself from writing songs from age 14 to taking over the stage at age 16.

From charging high fees like ₦19 million for a show in Enuguto, earning $300,000 for headlining Uganda’s NRG concert, she’s defended her worth while exposing industry pitfalls.

In past interviews, including on Lagos Meets London, she described the scene as “dark,” pointing to exploitative contracts, greedy middlemen, and the pressure young talents face.

Recall that there has always been a debate on which earning supersedes between football earnings and music earnings. With Madi’s claim, the debate not only rises but also intensifies.
