Popular Nigerian singer Orezi has sparked widespread debate after reacting to the new minimum cut-off mark for tertiary admissions announced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

In a post on social media, Orezi expressed shock at the minimum admissible score of 150 for universities and Colleges of Nursing, and 100 for Polytechnics.

Recalling his own experience, he wrote: “What is happening? A decline in education? I scored 224 in JAMB back then and my chances of getting admission into UNILAG was 30%. Finally got it… even though I didn’t get my first choice of study.”

The decision was unanimously agreed upon by heads of tertiary institutions at the 2026 JAMB Policy Meeting.

While institutions can set higher departmental cut-offs, the baseline aims to increase access following poor performance in this year’s UTME. The minimum entry age remains 16 years.

Orezi’s reaction has resonated with many Nigerians who worry that lowering the cut-off further reflects a steady decline in the quality of education. Others argue it gives more students a chance in a difficult examination environment.
