The family of late Nollywood comic icon  Mr John Okafor, a.k.a Mr Ibu has received N7.5 million in donations after his widow, Stella Okafor, made an emotional appeal for financial support.

Speaking in an interview with content creator King Mitchy, Stella revealed that the family has been struggling financially since the actor’s passing.

She said they had been without electricity for two months because they could not pay their bills, while her children were reportedly sent home from school over unpaid fees.

Her heartfelt appeal touched many Nigerians, who rallied together to support the family with donations.

Sharing an update on Instagram on Friday, King Mitchy disclosed that a total of N7.5 million had been raised.

According to her, the funds will be used to clear the children’s school fees, pay for the eldest daughter’s WAEC registration, and provide assistance with the family’s rent.

She wrote: “First of all, I sincerely want to thank everyone who donated. Together, we were able to raise ₦7.5 million for the family. God bless every single one of you

She continued: “This support will help pay the children’s school fees, including the eldest daughter’s WAEC fees, which they couldn’t afford. It will also help them with rent. After speaking with the mother, I advised her to move to a more affordable house, and we had a very long conversation.

She continued:“I’ll be posting the other parts of our conversation because there’s so much to share. I also asked her some of the questions many of you have been asking. I only met her two days ago after a neighbor called me to help.

She concluded: “I knew nothing about the family’s situation before then. My only focus from the beginning has been to make sure the children get the help they deserve. Thank you all once again for making this possible.”

However, the fundraising effort has also sparked controversy within Mr Ibu’s family. His third son, Somtochukwu Okafor, challenged Stella’s account of their financial situation, alleging that she sold several of the late actor’s properties after his death.

Adding to the debate, actor Tenkobo criticised Stella, accusing her of using Mr Ibu’s name and legacy to attract public sympathy and financial donations.
