Acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill, renowned for his iconic portrayal of Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.
His family announced the news on Monday, describing his passing in Sydney as “sudden and unexpected.”
Neill was surrounded by loved ones at St Vincent’s Private Hospital when he passed. In their statement, the family said: “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free.” They thanked hospital staff for their care and asked for privacy.

The actor had courageously shared his five-year battle with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. After standard chemotherapy faltered, he joined an Australian clinical trial for innovative CAR T-cell therapy. Just months ago in April, Neill proudly announced he was cancer-free, calling it an “extraordinary” medical success.

Tributes continue to flow in from fans and leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Neill leaves behind four children and multiple grandchildren. Further details on memorials will be shared later.
