With the growing popularity of public baby registries shared openly on social media, often inviting not just family and close friends, but followers, fans, and even strangers to contribute gifts or funds for their upcoming child.
Traditionally, baby registries were private affairs shared discreetly among invited guests for baby showers to guide practical purchases like cribs, diapers, strollers, feeding essentials and other baby things. However, the digital age, fueled by influencers, celebrities, and crowdfunding-style sites, has blurred these lines thereby giving it another style of approach.

On social media, some influencers post registries boldly, while others experiment by inviting celebrities or brands to baby showers for viral gifts. This has however, made Nigerians share their thoughts on the private wishlist now online begging tradition.

With Nigerian fashion designer Veekee James standing as a most recent case, she is currently under backlash after making her baby registry public and urging fans, “online uncles and aunties,” to donate items via shared links.
Generating buzz on social media, critics have labeled the practice as been “greedy,” arguing wealthy influencers shouldn’t solicit from followers while some have defended the practice seeing it as harmless, especially with group-gifting features for big-ticket items.
